Chess Enthusiasts Meet Up in Flagstaff – Lumberjack Student News

Original Article at https://www.jackcentral.org/

Every Monday at 6 p.m. on the southwest side of Flagstaff, chess enthusiasts gather at Your Pie Pizza to share their love for the game and connect with new people.

Individuals of all ages and experience levels attend these nights hosted by Flagstaff Chess Club. Chess players tend to be very welcoming and are always up for a game, Chase Shim, high school student and captain of Northland Preparatory Academy’s (NPA) chess team, said.

Flagstaff local Kyle Christie regularly attends these chess nights and has been playing for close to 30 years.

“It’s fun that the common ground is chess,” Christie said. “Often, people have different life experiences but still can enjoy sitting down and playing a game of chess.”

Christie has also attended other local chess meets for nearly 20 years, including events hosted by Macy’s European Coffee House and Bakery and Bookmans Entertainment Exchange. On Chess.com, a popular online chess community, Christie has a rank of approximately 1900. The average is typically between 800 and 1000.

L.A. Singles flocking to night-club to play chess.

From the L.A. Times

It’s a Thursday night in Santa Monica, and you’re feeling good. You’re sitting across from a cute stranger, and the vibes are vibing. In a spacious warehouse-style space, which might sound a tad sketch but somehow isn’t at all, 20- and 30-somethings are seated around rows of tables with chess boards. House music is bumping, and drinks are flowing. There’s pizza being made on-site, and two tattoo artists are around if you’re feeling adventurous and looking to commemorate the experience. And if you need a buffer for maintaining conversation with someone unfamiliar, no worries.

All of this is unfolding as you play a low-stakes game of chess. This is the magic of L.A. Chess Club.

From 8 p.m. to midnight every Thursday, happy regulars and excited first-timers show up to play chess and exercise their social muscles.
